Our History

The Linda Lorelle Scholarship Fund is rooted in the belief that all students should have the opportunity to access higher education, regardless of the hand they were dealt when they entered this world.  That fundamental belief drives our dedication to providing college scholarships , support and guidance to Houston area high school students in need of financial assistance, whose potential may be unfulfilled due to circumstances beyond their control

Mission and History

The Linda Lorelle Scholarship Fund was formed in December of 1991 as the result of Linda Lorelle’s desire to use her visibility as a news anchor to give back to the greater Houston community. Linda, her husband, Lou Gregory, and one of Linda’s colleagues at KPRC-TV, Martha Harvey, teamed up and under the umbrella of the Houston Tennis Association established the Linda Lorelle Tennis Classic.  Funds generated from this annual event went toward scholarships to students of all ages who participated in a city-wide, free program sponsored by the National Junior Tennis League, founded by one of Linda’s heroes, Arthur Ashe.  During a six year period, $242,000 was awarded to 78 deserving and thankful students. In addition, $50,000 was donated to the City of Houston to fund the National Junior Tennis League and another $5,000 was donated to the Houston Tennis Association Scholarship Fund. With this success in providing scholarships, Linda, Lou and the leadership of the Linda Lorelle Scholarship Fund decided to expand the mission and scope of its work, and in 1997 established its own public, non-profit 501 (c) (3) charity.  As of 2021, more than $4.5 million has been awarded to 373 students. Five former Lorelle Scholars are now on our Board of Directors, along with Linda and Lou’s daughter, Lindsey.

Developing Our MissioN

Linda and Lou’s vision was to create a scholarship fund unlike any other.  The first step was the development of the Mission Statement shown below.  Linda and Lou also recognized the importance of providing more than just scholarships if the students selected were to be truly successful.  In order to achieve that goal, it was decided to target high school juniors as scholarship applicants so the Linda Lorelle Scholarship Fund would have the recipients’ full senior year in high school to work with them and provide college preparedness and life skills training — everything from the college selection and application process to obtaining additional financial aid to etiquette and social skills training

Our Mission

We are dedicated to providing college scholarships, support and guidance to Houston area high school students in need of financial assistance, whose potential may be unfulfilled due to circumstances beyond their control.

Our Philosophy

We believe that all students should have the opportunity obtain an education regardless of where they are from or what their parents earn. This means providing support and guidance to those students who need it most, showing them that it is possible to change the trajectory of their lives and impact future generations
